WEST SIDE STORY opened on Broadway in September of 1957 to rave reviews. The Concord Players are proud to be celebrating the 50th anniversary year of this landmark musical. Originally conceived, directed and choreographed by the legendary Jerome Robbins, the musical boasts a book by Arthur Laurents, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, and a breath-taking score by Leonard Bernstein.
WEST SIDE STORY is an updated telling of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet transported to Manhattan’s “Hell’s Kitchen” in 1950’s New York City. This great love story resonates with exciting rhythms, unforgettable melodies, and stunning dance sequences as two idealistic young lovers, Tony and Maria, find themselves caught between warring street gangs, the “American” Jets and the Puerto Rican Sharks.
Their struggle to survive in a world of hate, violence, and prejudice is one of the most innovative, heart-wrenching and relevant musical dramas of our time and is often considered to be Broadway’s finest accomplishment.
