Players Win Trophy

DISPLAYING THE TROPHY won by the Concord Players in a 16 town competition with excerpts from "A Taste of Honey" are Betsy Connelly who played the part of Helen and won Special Commendation and Merle Hastings who played the part of Jo and was named the Best Actress.

The Concord Players won the coveted best show award of the New England Theater Conference Competition held June 2, 3, and 4 at Brandeis University. There were 16 contenders. The silver trophy, which is presented to the winning one-act play, has been awarded to the Players three times since its inception in 1954; in 1959, 1963, and againthisyear.

The Players' production of cuttings from "A Taste of Honey" was arranged by Patricia Butcher who won the Best Director Award. The set design and execution by Dick Hatch won the Best Set Award. Best Actress went to Merle Hastings who played the part of Jo in this contemporary drama written by Shelagh Delaney. Betsy Connelly, who played the part of Helen, won a Special Commendation.

The original Player’s production of "A Taste of Honey" was directed by Virginia Kirshner and presented in Concord this Spring. Mrs. Butcher adapted Mrs. Kirshner’s production to the NETC requirements.

Delaney’s play will be presented again at the Festival Theater showcase, along with winning performances from the Berkshire Drama Festival and the Fairfield Festival, on Sunday, June 11 at 8:30 p.m. at the New England Life Hall, Clarendon St. Boston. The Players extend a winning welcome to all who are interested in attending.
